Sound: Lip synching

This session will cover how to synchonise sound with your Flash animations.

There are several ways of doing this - the simplest way being to make separate movieClips for each of the basic phoneme groups.

You may find the Preston Blair lip shapes useful:

  • Before you start, you should find a short mp3 of someone talking - perhaps yourself?
  • Make a movieClip of a face and then place it on the stage.
  • Make separate movieClips for each of the basic phoneme groups.
  • Import your sound into Flash (File:Import:Import to Library...)
  • Make a separate layer for your sound - label it.
  • With frame 1 of this layer selected, drag your sound from the library, and 'add it' to the stage.
  • Notice how a small graphical representation of the sound appears in the layer.
  • With frame 1 of this layer selected, go to properties, and make sure the 'Synch' option is set to 'Stream'.
  • Scrub the playback head and you should hear a 'broken up' version of your sound - this will help you to synchonise your animation.
  • Make a separate layer, and use this to make labels for the different parts of the phrase or sentence you have.
  • Make another layer to contain the lips.
  • Place the relevant movieClips for each phoneme in this layer, making a new keyFrame for each new shape.
  • Play back your masterpiece - it may require tweaking!
